真剣に事情を話すと、認められることがある。

先輩と私とで相談して、イギリスでの休日をロンドン郊外の観光で過ごそうということになりました。 ホテルにある1日観光バス・パンフレットを見て、相談の結果、次のコースに決めました。

オックスフォード、ストラトフォード＆ウオーリック城1日観光コース。

日本人向けのパック旅行ではないので、日本語の分かるガイドはつかず、イギリス人による英語のみのガイドツアーでした。

二人とも英会話は得意ではありませんが、何とかなるだろうと気楽に考えていました。

又、観光バスだから、電車やバスや、地図なども調査する必要も無く楽なものだと考え、

詳しい案内書も用意しませんでした。

ところが、これがとんでもない展開となったのでした。

休日の前日にホテルのフロントに、予約を入れて、代金を支払い、観光用切符をもらいました。

翌日、有名ホテルの集合場所に行くことのなったのですが、こちらのホテルからは歩いて２０分位の所にありました。 確か朝の８時頃の集合だったと思います。

散歩がてら、歩いて行ったのですが、集合時間の30分前に集合場所のホテルに着きました。 ところが、観光用切符を確認しようとしたら、先輩が見当たらないと言うのです。

私：どうしましょう？

先輩：ホテルの部屋に置き忘れたかもしれない。 まだ、時間があるから、取ってくるよ。

先輩はタクシーですぐにホテルに戻って、行きました。

有名ホテルのロビーには休日の朝のせいか、私しかいません。 私は慣れない英語でフロントに聞きました。

私：どこで観光バスを待てばいいのですか？

フロントの職員：このロビーで待っていれば、迎えに来ますから。

時間は刻々と迫ってきました。 8時近くなっても先輩は現れません。 観光バスも迎えに来ません。

先輩はどうしたのだろう？ まだ、このロビーには私1人だが、本当にこのロビーに待っていればいいのか？ もしかしたら、ホテルの入り口あたりが集合場所ではないのか？

もしそうだったら、私達に気づかず観光バスは行ってしまうではないか？

私の英語が確かに通じていたのか心配になってきました。

フロントの職員に再度聞きました。

私：本当にここで待っていればいいのですか？

フロントの職員：このロビーで待っていれば迎えに来ますから。

職員は何度同じ事を聞くのかというような表情でした。

私は先輩が今来るか、今来るかと待ちきれずにホテルの入り口に行きました。 もう集合時間の8時になりました。

もう、今日の一日観光はだめなのか。 私はあきらめました。

そうしましたら、何と先輩が急ぎ、タクシーで現れたのです。

私：観光切符は見つかりましたか？

先輩：それが、いくら探しても見つからなかったんだよ。

私：え？ それで？

先輩：ホテルのフロントに再発行を申し入れたんだが、それもだめだったんだよ。

あとは観光バスのガイドに折衝するしかないな。

定刻を過ぎていましたが、私たちはホテルのロビーで待ちました。

しばらくすると、一人の男の人がホテルの入り口から入ってきました。

男：観光バスに乗る人はいませんか？

私たちは「ハイ」と言って、観光バスに向かいました。

バスガイドは女性でした。

私：私は観光切符を持っているのですが、パートナーが観光切符を無くしてしまった

のです。

先輩：私の名前と購入したホテルはここですので、すみませんが確認してください。

私たちは観光切符を無くしたことをつたない英語で真剣に話しました。

バスガイドはバスの無線機で本部と連絡を取りました。 少し、手間取っている様子でした。

観光切符を持っていないとだめなのか？ 一体どうなるんだろう？

私たちの心中は穏やかではありませんでした。

バスガイド：本部からＯＫが出ました。 どうぞ、お乗り下さい。

断られても仕方がないところ、やれやれ助かった。

バスが走り出して、郊外に出ての田園風景はとてものどかでした。

ロンドンからかなりの道のりでしたが、オックスフォードにつきました。

中世の面影が色濃く残っている所で、カレッジはたくさんありました。

日本の総合大学のマスプロ教室に慣れていたせいか、カレッジの教室の狭さに驚きました。 しかし、教授と少ない生徒でのエリート教育とはこういうものかと感心しました。

「不思議の国のアリス」の作者、ルイス・キャロルや「幸福な王子」の作者、オスカー・ワイルド等の著名人がここにいたと思うと、とても感慨深いものがありました。

次にストラトフォード・アポン・エーボンに行きました。

たくさんの草花が咲き乱れている美しい所でした。

シェークスピアの生家などを見学しました。

ガイドによれば、シェークスピアは結婚後、窓辺でロンドンの方向に向かって、芝居作家としての活躍を夢見ていたとのことです。

ここに人生の真理が存在しています。 自分の人生は自分がつくる典型的なケースだからです。

この後、自由時間が与えられました。 私達はイギリスの雰囲気に浸りつつ、シェークスピアの劇場を見学したり、土産物店で時間を過ごしましたが、あやうく集合時間に遅れそうになりました。

バスに戻ったところ、定刻になっても、一部のメンバーが戻ってこないのです。

ガイドが心当たりが無いかと聞くのですが、誰も知りませんとの答えでした。

乗客は発音から判断して、フランス人、ドイツ人、スペイン人、イタリア人などののグループが多かったようですが、日本人は私達2人だけでした。

10分ほど待ちましたが、観光スケジュールに支障をきたすということで、バスはスタートしてしまったのでした。

これは大変だ。 もし、これが私達だったら、どうなっていたんだろう？

ロンドンからはるか離れて、地図も無いし、これからどうやって帰ったらいいのだろう？

私達は気楽な気分から真剣な気分になっていったのでした。

もう、これからは、いいかげんにガイドの英語を聞いているわけにはいかない。

少なくとも、集合場所と集合時間を絶対に聞き逃してはならない。

私の耳はダンボの耳のように大きくなった感じでした。

やがてバスは次の目的地、ウオーリック城に到着しました。

今度はいきなり自由時間となりました。 ガイドから集合場所と集合時間が告げられました。 私は真剣に聞き取り、ノートに書き込んだのでした。

それでも、多くの人はガイドについて行きました、

私達はウオーリック城の中で蝋人形のある貴族の部屋や牢獄等を見学しました。

塔に登って、外の美しい田園風景を眺めたり、お互いに写真を撮ったりしました。

前回のこともあるので、私達は土産物店もそこそこに集合時間よりかなり早く集合場所に行きました。 皆も同じ考えらしく、早く到着していました。

ところが、驚くことに前回、バスに乗り遅れて行方不明のメンバーが来ていたのでした。

私はガイドに聞きました。

私：一体メンバーはどうやって、ここに到着できたのですか？

ガイド：後から来た同じコースの別の会社の観光バスに事情を真剣に話して、

乗せてもらったんだそうです。 そして、更に、この観光バスの集合場所と

集合時間を調べて、ここに到着したというわけです。

私：なるほど。

私はこのような対応方法に気がつかなったので、本当に感心してしまいました。

乗り遅れた人にかまわず、やむなく観光バスをスタートさせたかと思えば、乗り遅れた人を暖かく別の会社の観光バスが乗せてあげる。 なんだか、イギリス人の合理性と愛情の二つを同時に体験した貴重な1日観光旅行でした。

We are sometimes recognized when we speak a matter from our heart, in earnest.

My senior and I decide to spend a holiday by sight-seeing of suburbs in England.

We decided next course consulting each other, seeing one day sight-seeing pamphlet in a hotel.

Oxford, Stratford-upon-avon and Wallik castle , one day sight-seeing

There was not a pamphlet for only Japanese. We chose a guide tour with English guide, not Japanese.

We were not good at English. But we thought easy to go there, because it’s tour was sight-seeing bus tour..

So, we didn’t prepare a detail guide-book and map

But a surprising accident happened around us.

We reserved and paid to the front of hotel for sight-seeing tour, and got tickets

Next day, we had to go to another famous hotel to catch a sight-seeing bus.

The hotel was apart from our hotel about 20 minutes by taking a walk.

I think the time to catch the bus was about 8 o’clock.

We went to the hotel taking a walk. We reached at the hotel before 30 minutes of the time.

When we examined a ticket each other, my senior said he could not find it.

I: what shall we do ?

My senior: I think I left it in my room. I will go and come back soon.

He went to our hotel using a taxi immediately.

There was only one of me in a hotel lobby. I asked a clerk of the hotel.

I: where do I wait to catch a sight-seeing bus ?

Clerk: Please wait in this lobby. A clerk of bus-company shall receive you.

Time went by. My senior didn’t appear about 8 o’clock and a bus didn’t appear too.

What happened about my senior ? There was only one of me, as yet.

I thought「Is a place to catch a bus the entrance of hotel ? 」

So, I asked again the clerk.

I: do I wait here, really ?

Clerk: Please wait in this lobby. A clerk of bus-company shall receive you.

He was seen with a little anger to hear same question.

I wen to a entrance of the hotel to find my senior because I could not wait in a lobby.

Time was passed 8 o’clock, already.

Did our plan pass away ? I gave up our plan.

After that, my senior came to me from a taxi.

I :Did you find a ticket ?

My senior: I didn’t find.

I: Oh. And, then ?

My senior: I applied the front clerk to reissue a ticket. But he refused to do it.

I am going to negotiate a guide of sight-seeing bus, this time.

Although the time passed by, we waited to come a bus in a lobby.

After a while, a man appeared from a entrance of hotel.

Man: are there men to go sight-seeing ?

We said 「Here」to a man and went to a bus.

A bus guide was woman.

I:I have a ticket of sight-seeing but my partner lost it.

My senior: My name and hotel of me is here. Please confirm this.

We spoke to lose a ticket earnestly. The guide talked to a head office by telephone of a bus. They took a some times to examine and to decide.

Were we out without a ticket ? Our heart was not calm down.

Guide: The head office said all right. Please ride on a bus.

We were very fortunate.

The bus began to start and went on and on. When we went to out of skirt of a town,

we saw a serene country landscape.

We reached to Oxford where was a long distance from London.

There were many colleges. There much remained atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

I astonished to see a narrow seminar room because I was accustomed to a wide room in Japanese university.

But I respected English elite education like this.

I was overcome by deep emotion as here were Lewis Carroll, Alice’s adventures in wonderland, Oscar wild, author of The happy prince, etc.

Next, we went to Stratford-upon-avon. There were beautiful place with many flowering plants. We visited the house where Shakespeare was born, etc.

We was reported by guide that Shakespeare had a dream which he was active in London as a writer of drama, looking at direction of London in window side.

There is truth in this. This is a typical case that man makes his life by himself.

After that, we was given free times. We enjoyed English atmosphere to see Shakespeare’s theater and spent time buying souvenirs.

When we entered in the bus, one group didn’t return.

Guide asked to in bus where they were. But members didn’t answer.

There were judging from their pronunciation, French, Germany, Spanish, Italian etc. Japanese were only 2 men of us.

We waited about 10 minutes. But after that, the bus was started to fill schedule of sight-seeing.

We thought this was serious. If we were them, what shall we do ?

How we return to London, as we didn’t a map and detailed guide book ?

Our feelings tuned to serious from easy.

We could not listen to guide’s English voices easily any more.

At least, we had to listen to guide’s time and place to gather, carefully.

I felt my ear was getting bigger more and more like a ear of elephant.

Before long, we reached to next object, Wallik castle.

This time, we had free times at first. Guide reported time and place to gather.

I listened to guide carefully and I wrote them in my note-book.

Although, many members followed guide. We visited a room of a noble man with wax figures and prison etc. We climbed a tower of the castle and took a picture each other.

This time, we reached early the place to gather after buying some souvenirs.

Other members reached early, too like us. But we astonished to see a missing group who were late to ride the bus.

I asked to the guide.

I: How did they come to this place ?

Guide: They talked a guide of another company’s sight-seeing bus earnestly that

they were late to ride the bus. They were permitted to join the bus.

They came to Oxford riding the bus and they examined the place and time

to gather. After that, they came to this place.

I: I see.

I listened this story admiringly because I didn’t find this way.

One guide made the bus started thinking the schedule of other members .

The other company’s guide made a missing group rode in the bus to help.

I felt rationality and affection of English. I had a precious experience in one day sight-seeing trip.
